(It may be Tuesday in East Asia and Australia.)Lunar eclipses are essentially the opposite of sun eclipses. Rather than the moon shifting in among Earth and the sun as will occur Aug. 21 all through a lunar eclipse it https://grabcad.com/goodnight.quotes-1 s Earth that performs monkey inside the middle casting its shadow at the moon.Earth s shadow has two parts: the umbra that is the darker inner portion and the penumbra the lighter outer part. Their interactions with the moon can create 3 forms of lunar eclipses: partial general and penumbral.During a partial lunar eclipse best a part of Earth s umbra covers the moon. This is due to the fact the alignment of solar-Earth-moon is not ideal and Earth s shadow as an alternative seems to take best a bite out of the moon as opposed to engulf it completely. Sky gazers will note that a part of the moon s face has grew to become dark as it enters the umbra. Continue analyzing the primary storyCongress leaders never doubted the power of moneybags. They believed that you could order an election victory like you call up Pizza Hut and ask for chicken pepperoni. Karnataka s Congress minister DK Shivakumar who is being raided by IT officials for the fourth day on Saturday is one of them. That s not a big surprise. The Congress which presided over India for 55 of the 70 years since Independence not only institutionalised corruption but even invented nurtured and depended upon moneybag politics for perpetuating itself in power. It goes without saying but it still needs to be said that though the Congress copyrighted moneybag politics in India other parties aped it in good measure with the specious logic of fighting corruption with corruption. Yet the Congress remains the mother of it.DK Shivakumar at his residence during the I-T raids. PTIEverybody knows the potent power of money in politics. Congress knows it better. Money buys posters banners and buntings for election meetings. Money buys the trucks and tractors to ferry crowds that turn into what newspapers call massive rallies. Money buys the guys who throw tomatoes or stones at speakers. Money buys musclemen. Money buys saris nose-studs dhotis television sets whiskey and sundry things edible or otherwise to bribe voters before polling. If you fall short of numbers after elections money can buy loyalties. After elections if the numbers don t add up enough for forming a government money buys new arithmetic. A no-confidence motion? That s easy. Money can buy confidences. In the Congress few have mastered the art of translating money into power better than Shivakumar who is the Picasso of the art of moneybags. At the very root of moneybag politics is a business principle which is as plain as the sun rising in the east: you get into politics with money and you use politics to make more money because no other organised sector offers as high returns on relatively low investments as politics. There is no mutual fund or stock on the planet that pays off as many tax-free dividends as politics.Hang democracy money is what oils the political machine and it is corruption that fills the moneybags. Elementary my dear Watson.Shivakumar s wealth grew three-fold in five yearsYou could accuse the NDA government of political designs in fixing Shivakumar at an opportune time. The raids came just when he was keeping Gujarat s Congress MLAs in a Bengaluru resort in to stop them from defecting to the BJP. Yet you cannot deny the money power Shivakumar possesses and has often used to turn political equations upside down.In the early 1980s I watched Shivakumar lurk in the shadows of power corridors of the Vidhana Soudha or outside ministers bungalows. A young and bashful Youth Congress general secretary waiting for a chance to talk to the media or have a word with a leader. The man who was shy of entering power corridors soon owned them. Those of us who noticed his shift from the sidelines to the centre stage had some kind of an idea about his wealth but no clue to the immense size of the financial empire he was building around himself.I heard senior journalists and Congress leaders joke with Shivakumar more than once about his sudden affluence to which the man would rig up a coy smile and say Illa sir (No sir) and then ask with great hospitality: Want some tea sir? Like in most such stories his origins were humble. From a nobody born into a farmer s family in Kanakapura 50 kilometres south of Bengaluru Shivakumar grew to become one of India s richest politicians with his business interests ranging from mining to education and from agriculture to real estate. From 2008 to 2013 his declared assets alone rose more than three-fold to Rs 251 crore.Belonging to the dominant Vokkaliga caste the Congress heavyweight hit headlines for the first time when he contested against the community s strongman HD Deve Gowda in the 1985 Assembly election. Though he lost he fought the awesome Gowda family head on for many years often with success. Shivakumar has won the assembly election six times and he got his brother a Lok Sabha seat.As it turned out his political clout rose in proportion to his money power. Everybody made money but Shivakumar made more maybe more than what was good for him and his party as he is no doubt finding now.Shivakumar s recipe for successShivakumar had understood early on how politics worked more specifically how the Congress machine worked. He found that in politics you don t talk. You let the money talk because money is the best persuader. A suitcase-full of money can be exchanged for political loyalty in a hotel or a resort with not a word spoken. All along Shivakumar had endeared himself to senior leaders with his skills in organising from crowds at rallies to MLAs to back a chief minister. The rustle of crisp mint-fresh currency is music to most Congress ears. He was the master of ceremonies fair and foul usually foul.Only those who failed to understand the economics of politics were surprised why in 1991 S Bangarappa made him a minister. Bangarappa was grateful for the support Shivakumar mustered for him in the race for the chief minister s post. Then he caught the eye of then chief minister SM Krishna who made him an important minister in 1999 and then he made himself indispensable to a variety of leaders including those in the Congress high command.Money buys everything does it?And if it s the slush money of scams that packs moneybags corruption is what the https://www.pentaxuser.com/user/gdnther-301781 Congress nurtured like a baby. That baby imp is now an adult monster.Corruption is no longer a malignant tumour that can be sliced off body politic with a surgeon s knife. It s a banyan that has spread its roots so deep into the political soil that it can t be uprooted in one fell sweep. Even a raid a day can t keep corruption away.Okay money can buy everything. Or maybe not everything. For starters it can t buy a man with unswerving dedication to the eradication of corruption. But intentions don t and can t always produce desired results. Can Narendra Modi bring an end to moneybag politics? I am not ready to bet my money on it not as yet. I ll wait. The author tweets @sprasadindia BENGALURU: After being grilled by the Income Tax sleuths for three consecutive days in connection with an alleged tax evasion case Karnataka Minister DK Shivakumar today said he has not violated the law and the truth will eventually come out. On Wednesday Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in a statement had alleged that the IT department action was an attempt to silence the voice against the BJP. He had yesterday termed the IT raids against Shivakumar a politically motivated move on part of the Centre. The Karnataka government has expressed its strong protest to the Centre over the use of CRPF personnel during searches saying it cast aspersion on the state police. The raids at the resort had on August 2 sparked a huge political row with Parliament getting disrupted and the Congress terming it an unprecedented witch-hunt to win one Rajya Sabha seat. They said there was no need to have used the central police forces in the raids. This is a politically motivated raid said Karnataka s Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The tax officials have denied charges and said the timing had nothing to do with the presence of the MLAs from Gujarat.Mr Shivakumar has been tasked with managing 43 Congress lawmakers from Gujarat sequestered at a Bengaluru resort. Soon after the raid ended the minister joined forces with the Gujarat lawmakers after they met the Governor Vajubhai Vala who is also from their home state. They went to Vidhana Soudha and then travelled back to the luxury resort which has been their home for a week now.The minister is a powerful leader in the state and is called upon by the party for organising events and for fund-raising. He has been charged with corruption before. Mr Shivakumar is officially very wealthy and is involved in many different businesses. The homes of his relatives including his brother D K Suresh MP from rural Bengaluru were also searched. The IT team did not recover any cash from Suresh s house according to documents forwarded by Shivakumar aides. BENGALURU: Karnataka energy minister D K Shivakumar has proved a tough nut for income tax sleuths to crack reportedly remaining uncooperative during the last part of the interrogation on Friday. While Kumar was cooperative on the first two days I-T sources said he remained silent on at least 18 shell companies which he floated purportedly to avoid tax. He did not divulge much during the marathon six-hour grilling session on Friday they added. His interrogation was recorded by the deputy director (I-T investigation) and three other tax sleuths. Shivakumar was not cooperating with the investigation. He sought two or three days time to provide information and said he cannot recollect much since he was not well. If he continues to remain uncooperative we will have to hand over the case to the Enforcement Directorate I-T sources added. During interrogation a team of doctors was also called as Shivakumar a diabetic complained of uneasiness.Later the team deferred re cording of his statement by three hours to ensure he takes rest and cooperates with them. Earlier a team of chartered accountants was also summoned by I-T officials to verify the authenticity of the records pertaining to the shell companies. It is not yet clear whether these companies were used to launder money and only a thorough enquiry will throw more light on this a source said. Statements of family members were also recorded and the process lasted for two hours. The I-T department is expected to share documents on shell companies with the ED and register a case only if they find any violations of the Foreign Exchange Management Act. IN-LAWS HOUSE STILL UNDER SIEGE Mysuru: Income-tax officials searching the residence of Thimmaiah father in-law of energy minister DK Shivakumar continued their marathon operation 60 hours after they entered the house.Though Varamahalakshmi was being celebrated on Friday there was no festive mood at the house in Indiranagar (formerly Ittigegud) which has remained out of bounds to all friends and relatives.Thimmaiah was last seen outside on Thursday morning. His granddaughter came out to collect milk sachets and newspapers early in the day.Thimmaiah lives with his wife son Sathyanarayana daughterin-law and two grandchildren. The raid surprised neighbours as this is first such operation being conducted on a house in Mysuru by I-T officials. BENGALURU: There were no signs of the celebrations that accompany Varamahalakshmi (Goddess of wealth) Vrata at the house of energy minister D K Shivakumar in upmarket Sadashivanagar on Friday. Homes in the neighbourhood were redolent with the puja festivities and flowers as I-T searches continued for the third day at his palatial mansion. The family chose to offer a simple and quiet puja after Shivakumar awoke complaining of dizziness and discomfort. I-T officials asked the family to summon Shivakumar s consulting physician Dr B Ramana Rao who arrived with three others and found his blood pressure to be very high. He told them the minister has been suffering from uneasiness for the past two days. When the doctors checked his BP it was 180120 mm Hg which is also suggestive of hypertension. Normal pressure range is 12080 mm Hg family sources said. Shivakumar also underwent a series of blood and cardiology tests to confirm whether he had any other issues but nothing serious was found. He is currently on medication to stabilize blood pressure family sources added. Shivakumar s brother and Congress MP D K Suresh rushed to enquire about Kumar s health after the news flash by television channels but he was initially denied entry by CRPF personnel who are guarding the house for the past three days. However he was allowed to meet Kumar for 10 minutes in their presence just to enquire about his health. He (DKS) seemed to be fine and was asked by doctors to take rest. He also told me his BP could have gone up due to lack of sleep for two days. Officials allowed him to rest for two hours and promised to complete searches at the earliest Suresh said. Senior legislator and chief whip of the Legislative Council Ivan D Souza also rushed to Shivakumar s residence on hearing about his health but he was denied entry by CRPF per sonnel at the instance of senior I-T officials. D Souza left the place in a huff alleging that i was a politically motivated raid to win one Rajya Sabha seat. Shivakumar s s supporters including some advocates who had come near the residence in groups also raised slogans against PM Narendra Modi and Amit Shah alleging that they are using the I-T department to finish off their leader. BENGALURU: Income-tax raids on properties allegedly linked to Karnataka energy minister DK Shivakumar continued across the state for the second consecutive day on Thursday with strong indications that the Enforcement Directorate is likely to take over the probe. In a swoop that raised a political storm the income-tax department conducted searches at 64 locations and properties in the past https://codepen.io/gdnther/ 48 hours in a tax-evasion case. Sources said that CM Siddaramaiah has convened a meeting of senior ministers on Friday to discuss how to go about the issue on the raids on their cabinet colleague. Sources in the income-tax department said about Rs 10 crore in cash was recovered since Wednesday and the department is investigating Shivakumar in a case of alleged tax evasion and huge undisclosed investments in real estate and jewellery and some investments allegedly linked to him in Singapore and other foreign locations. To disprove the claims of I-T sources Kumar s family released the I-T department s pancha nama document drawn up at Kumar s residence to suggest that the officials were making a vain attempt. Not a single rupee was seized in the nearly 48-hour operation said a family member sharing the document. The panchanama signed by senior I-T officer O N Hari Prasad Rao deputy commissioner income tax (investigation) suggests there was no recovery so far. Truth has prevailed. They have not managed to get anything from us a family member said. However I-T officials said the panchanama pertained to the office premises of Shiva Kumar s brother and MP DK Suresh which is also in Sadashivanagar where the search began at 7.15am and ended at 10.45pm on August 2. CM has convened a meeting of senior ministers on Friday to discuss how to go about the issue on the raids on their cabinet colleague. A source in the ED confirmed they have asked for evidence and if satisfied with it are likely to visit Kumar s residence on Friday . They also received a formal complaint against Kumar from Guruprasad a resident of Ramanagara Kumar s home district. In a complaint to the ED a copy of which was accessed by TOI Guruprasad has made several charges against Kumar. He alleged that the minister gave some select people in Kanakapura his assembly constituency Rs 2 lakh each and got demonetized currency worth crores of rupees converted into new currency. Kumar with the help of two associates in Bengaluru also got more than Rs 2 000 crore in demonetized notes converted through money laundering he claimed in the complaint. The complainant also alleged that Kumar as energy minister made Rs 6 000 crore in the Rs 20 000 crore solar power project deal. The 1500MW project touted to be Asia s biggest power project has been proposed at Pavagada Tumakuru district. Guruprasad also alleged that the minister s land was acquired from farmers in benami deals: they were paid paltry sums and the same land was later leased to the Solar Power Corporation of India for a high amount. BENGALURU: Karnataka energy minister DK Shivakumar is in charge of looking after 44 MLAs from Gujarat who are in a resort in the outskirts of Bengaluru till the day of the Rajya Sabha elections August 8. The Congress government in Karnataka and the party s state unit have kept away from the job of guarding the MLAs. Shivakumar who was in Singapore when the MLAs were brought to Bengaluru deputed his brother and Bengaluru Rural MP DK Suresh initially for the task before rushing back and taking charge. Shivakumar had lost out in his recent bid to occupy the post of the party state unit chief but has made a comeback now after the Congress high command reportedly asked for his help in safeguarding the MLAs before the crucial RS polls where Congress president Sonia Gandhi s political secretary Ahmed Patel is seeking re-election. I have been asked to help out and I am doing all that is necessary for the sake of the party. We have not made any plans for these MLAs to tour. But we will ensure that they will be safe and our party candidate wins the Rajya Sabha seat Shivakumar said. We don t want to get involved in this activity particularly as it s election year in the state a Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee office bearer told ET. Chief minister Siddaramaiah refrained from making any comment on the matter. When queried he just said: It is being handled by the party. With all the hosting left to just Shivakumar and Suresh it has led to some humour with neither fluent in Hindi while most of the Gujarat MLAs can hardly speak English. Communication has been a problem but we are managing the associate admitted. He said the Gujarat state unit of the Congress was bearing the expenses of the MLAs travel and stay in the resort. The Karnataka unit and the government have not been burdened with it he added. Ahmed Patel accused the BJP of indulging in an unprecedented witch-hunt to win one Rajya Sabha seat. Senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel on Wednesday slammed BJP after Income-Tax department raided on locations linked to Karnataka Energy minister DK Shivakumar owner of the resort where 44 Gujarat MLAs are currently residing. Patel accused the BJP of indulging in an unprecedented witch-hunt to win one Rajya Sabha seat. Patel who is contesting the Rajya Sabha polls from Gujarat said the I-T raids on the Congress minister shows the utter desperation and frustration of BJP. After using the state machinery and every other agency these I-T raids show their utter desperation and frustration he said on Twitter. Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala too slammed BJP after raids. Attempt was made to bribe legislators in Gujarat; when everything failed a frustrated BJP Govt now resorting to IT raids on Congress Surjewala said. Anand Sharma another senior Congress leader accused BJP of blatantly misusing state machinery for personal political gains. It is now becoming a trend to blatantly misuse powers of the state Sharma said Rajya Sabha. The minister & his brother an elected representative coordinating in the stay of Gujarat MLAs that is why it is a targeted timing Sharma added. While NDA ministers defended their decision. Niyam sab ke liye ek hota hai.Congress ke paap ka ghada bhar chuka hai (Rules are same for everyone Congress https://www.zotero.org/gdnther has reached the limits of wrongdoings) Dharmendra Pradhan Union Minister on IT said. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley also spoke on the issue no search has taken place in the resort as such and no MLA was searched only one particular Karnataka minister was searched he said in Rajya Sabha. In what took Congress by surprise Income Tax Department on Monday conducted searches at multiple locations in Karnataka and Delhi related to energy minister D K Shivakumar in connection with a tax evasion probe case. Shivakumar is the same Congress lawmaker who is hosting the party MLAs from Gujarat at a resort near Bengaluru. Patel who is also Congress president Sonia Gandhi s political secretary is re-contesting the Rajya Sabha election from Gujarat.
