Soon after the raid ended the minister joined forces with the Gujarat lawmakers after they met the Governor Vajubhai Vala who is also from their home state. BENGALURU: Karnataka energy minister D K Shivakumar has proved a tough nut for income tax sleuths to crack reportedly remaining uncooperative during the last part of the interrogation on Friday. While Kumar was cooperative on the first two days I-T sources said he remained silent on at least 18 shell companies which he floated purportedly to avoid tax. He did not divulge much during the marathon six-hour grilling session on Friday they added. His interrogation was recorded by the deputy director (I-T investigation) and three other tax sleuths. Shivakumar was not cooperating with the investigation. He sought two or three days time to provide information and said he cannot recollect much since he was not well. If he continues to remain uncooperative we will have to hand over the case to the Enforcement Directorate I-T sources added. During interrogation a team of doctors was also called as Shivakumar a diabetic complained of uneasiness.Later the team deferred re cording of his statement by three hours to ensure he takes rest and cooperates with them. Earlier a team of chartered accountants was also summoned by I-T officials to verify the authenticity of the records pertaining to the shell companies. It is not yet clear whether these companies were used to launder money and only a thorough enquiry will throw more light on this a source said. Statements of family members were also recorded and the process lasted for two hours.The I-T department is expected to share documents on shell companies with the ED and register a case only if they find any violations of the Foreign Exchange Management Act. IN-LAWS HOUSE STILL UNDER SIEGE Mysuru: Income-tax officials searching the residence of Thimmaiah father in-law of energy minister DK Shivakumar continued their marathon operation 60 hours after they entered the house.Though Varamahalakshmi was being celebrated on Friday there was no festive mood at the house in Indiranagar (formerly Ittigegud) which has remained out of bounds to all friends and relatives.Thimmaiah was last seen outside on Thursday morning.His granddaughter came out to collect milk sachets and newspapers early in the day.Thimmaiah lives with his wife son Sathyanarayana daughterin-law and two grandchildren.The raid surprised neighbours as this is first such operation being conducted on a house in Mysuru by I-T officials.

I-T officials asked the family to summon Shivakumar s consulting physician Dr B Ramana Rao who arrived with three others and found his blood pressure to be very high. He told them the minister has been suffering from uneasiness for the past two days. When the doctors checked his BP it was 180120 mm Hg which is also suggestive of hypertension. Normal pressure range is 12080 mm Hg family sources said. Shivakumar also underwent a series of blood and cardiology tests to confirm whether he had any other issues but nothing serious was found. He is currently on medication to stabilize blood pressure family sources added. Shivakumar s brother and Congress MP D K Suresh rushed to enquire about Kumar s health after the news flash by television channels but he was initially denied entry by CRPF personnel who are guarding the house for the past three days. However he was allowed to meet Kumar for 10 minutes in their presence just to enquire about his health. He (DKS) seemed to be fine and was asked by doctors to take rest. He also told me his BP could have gone up due to lack of sleep for two days. Officials allowed him to rest for two hours and promised to complete searches at the earliest Suresh said. Senior legislator and chief whip of the Legislative Council Ivan D Souza also rushed to Shivakumar s residence on hearing about his health but he was denied entry by CRPF per sonnel at the instance of senior I-T officials. D Souza left the place in a huff alleging that i was a politically motivated raid to win one Rajya Sabha seat. Shivakumar s s supporters including some advocates who had come near the residence in groups also raised slogans against PM Narendra Modi and Amit Shah alleging that they are using the I-T department to finish off their leader.

A source in the ED confirmed they have asked for evidence and if satisfied with it are likely to visit Kumar s residence on Friday . They also received a formal complaint against Kumar from Guruprasad a resident of Ramanagara Kumar s home district. In a complaint to the ED a copy of which was accessed by TOI Guruprasad has made several charges against Kumar. He alleged that the minister gave some select people in Kanakapura his assembly constituency Rs 2 lakh each and got demonetized currency worth crores of rupees converted into new currency. Kumar with the help of two associates in Bengaluru also got more than Rs 2 000 crore in demonetized notes converted through money laundering he claimed in the complaint. The complainant also alleged that Kumar as energy minister made Rs 6 000 crore in the Rs 20 000 crore solar power project deal. The 1500MW project touted to be Asia s biggest power project has been proposed at Pavagada Tumakuru district. Guruprasad also alleged that the minister s land was acquired from farmers in benami deals: they were paid paltry sums and the same land was later leased to the Solar Power Corporation of India for a high amount.
